Duraisingam, Bowlers Shine as Malaysia Women Outclass Hong Kong in Asian Games Qualifier
KUALA LUMPUR — A stellar all-round performance from skipper Winifred Duraisingam and a disciplined bowling display powered Malaysia Women to a comfortable 34-run victory over Hong Kong Women in the 5th match of the Asian Games Women's Qualifier at the Bayuemas Oval on Thursday.
Defending a modest total of 103, the Malaysian bowling unit completely choked the opposition, bundling Hong Kong out for just 69 runs in 18.2 overs to pocket two crucial points in Group A.
Malaysia Recovers to Post 103
Earlier in the day, Hong Kong won the toss and elected to field first. Malaysia's innings got off to a slow start, losing opener Ainna Hamizah Hashim (8) early to Maryam Bibi. However, Captain Winifred Duraisingam anchored the innings with a patient 35 off 46 balls, including a boundary.
Elsa Hunter provided a quick injection of momentum, striking a brisk 12 off just 8 balls at a strike rate of 150.00 before being cleaned up by Kary Chan. Middle-order contributions from Mahirah Izzati Ismail (20 off 19 balls) and late boundaries from Nur Dania Syuhada (9* off 13) helped Malaysia push past the 100-run mark, finishing their allotted 20 overs at 103/6.
For Hong Kong, Emma Lai was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 2 for 18 in her four overs, while Kary Chan kept things tightly under wraps with a highly economical spell of 1/10 from her four overs.
Clinical Bowling Suffocates Hong Kong Chase
Chasing 104 for victory, Hong Kong's innings never found any rhythm. Spin-bowler Nur Dania Syuhada struck crucial early blows, dismissing opener Shanzeen Shahzad for a duck and quickly removing the dangerous Hong Kong skipper Natasha Miles (6) and Kary Chan (7). Syuhada finished with impressive figures of 3 for 18.
Shing Chan (13) and Maryam Bibi (17) attempted a slow rebuild, but the Malaysian bowlers refused to give away any easy scoring options. Ainna Hamizah Hashim tore through the lower-middle order, capturing 3 wickets for just 9 runs in her 4-over spell, which included a maiden.
As the required run rate climbed out of reach, the pressure proved too much. Duraisingam returned to wrap up the tail, taking 2 for 15, while Mahirah Izzati Ismail took the final wicket in the 19th over to seal an emphatic win for the hosts.
